Musk Deer

As per a report by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), currently no breeding programme has been started in Indian zoos for the conservation of musk deer.

  • Small, solitary deer found in high-altitude regions.
  • Known for their musk gland, which produces a valuable aromatic substance used in perfumes and traditional medicine.
  • Nocturnal and prefer dense forests and alpine meadows for habitat.
  • Found in Himalayan regions of India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Myanmar, and Russia.
  • In India, they inhabit Askot Wildlife Sanctuary, Gangotri National Park, and Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Conservation Status –
    • IUCN StatusEndangered, except Siberian Musk Deer (Vulnerable).
    • CITES ListAppendix I (strictest protection for populations in Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan).
    • Wildlife Protection Act, 1972Schedule I (highest protection in India).
  • ThreatsPoaching for musk, habitat destruction, and illegal wildlife trade.
  • Ecological Importance
    • Prey species for predators like snow leopards and wolves.
