T.N.’s mangrove cover grows to 9,039 ha in 2024, has significant carbon stock: report

  • Found in tropical and subtropical regions, between 25°N and 25°S latitude.
  • Thrive in waterlogged, oxygen-deficient soils and tolerate brackish water due to specialized adaptations.
  • Adaptation Features –
    • Stilt Roots: Provide support and stability in soft, muddy soil.
    • Pneumatophores: Aerial roots that enable gas exchange in waterlogged conditions.
    • Salt Excretory Glands: Secrete excess salt to regulate internal salinity levels.
    • Viviparous Seeds: Seeds germinate while still attached to the parent tree for better survival chances.
  • Asia has a share of 42 % of the world’s mangroves, which is followed by Africa (21%), North/Central America (15%), Oceania (12%), and South America (11%).
  • Countries with the largest area of mangroves – Indonesia, Brazil, Australia and Mexico
  • Mangroves in India – West Bengal has a total of 42.45% of India’s mangrove cover, followed by Gujarat at 23.66%, and A&N Islands at 12.39%.
