UNESCO designated 16 new Global Geoparks as Global Geoparks Network

  • Designated areas that showcase geological heritage of international importance.
  • Recognition – The designation lasts for 4 years, after which the site undergoes a revalidation process.
  • Management – Geoparks are managed by a legally recognized body under national legislation.
  • Economic Activities – The status does not impose restrictions on economic activities, as long as they comply with local laws.
  • Global Geoparks Network (GGN) – Membership in the GGN is mandatory, promoting collaboration and networking among geoparks worldwide.
  • India’s Status – India does not have any UNESCO Global Geoparks yet.
    • Efforts are being made to get recognition for sites like Erra Matti Dibbalu (Red Sand Dunes) in Visakhapatnam
