Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) is set to become a new sanctuary for rhinos from Nepal.
Pilibhit Tiger Reserve
- Location – Uttar Pradesh
- Situated along the India-Nepal border, at the Himalayan foothills and the plains of the Terai Arc Landscape.
- Rivers and Dams – River Gomti originates here.
- Acts as the catchment area for rivers like Sharda
- Bordered by the Sharda Sagar Dam.
- Vegetation – Features North Indian moist deciduous forests, with sal woodlands covering majority of the area.
- Includes tall grasslands and swamps, sustained by seasonal flooding.
- Fauna – Bengal tigers, swamp deer, Bengal floricans, hog deer, leopards etc.
Terai Arc Landscape (TAL):
- A lowland region in parts of southern Nepal and northern India that lies to the south of the outer foothills of the Himalayas
- Comprises Shivalik hills, bhabhar zones, and Terai floodplains.
- In India, it stretches between rivers Yamuna (west) and Bhagmati (east).
- Covers parts of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar
- Terai region is known for its fertile soil.
