Mahuadanr, India’s first wolf sanctuary in Jharkhand located within the Palamau Tiger Reserve, offers hope for an often-vilified Indian carnivore
Palamau Tiger Reserve:
- Location – Situated in the Chhota Nagpur plateau region of Jharkhand.
- Forms a part of Betla National Park.
- Historical Significance –
- One of the first 9 tiger reserves established under ‘Project Tiger’.
- 1st reserve globally to conduct a tiger census using pugmark counts in 1932, supervised by J.W. Nicholson.
- Rivers – North Koyal, Auranga, and Burha rivers flow through the reserve.
- Burha is the only perennial river in the drought-prone area.
- Mineral Wealth – Rich in minerals such as Bauxite and Coal.
- Vegetation –
- Dominated by Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous forests, primarily Sal (Shorea robusta) and its associates.
- Smaller patches of Northern Tropical Moist Deciduous forests are also present.
