Left wing extremism has impeded forestry operations in PTR

  • Location – Situated in the Chhota Nagpur plateau region of Jharkhand.
  • Forms a part of Betla National Park.
  • Historical Significance –
    • One of the first 9 tiger reserves established under ‘Project Tiger’.
    • 1st reserve globally to conduct a tiger census using pugmark counts in 1932, supervised by J.W. Nicholson.
  • Rivers – North Koyal, Auranga, and Burha rivers flow through the reserve.
    • Burha is the only perennial river in the drought-prone area.
  • Mineral Wealth – Rich in minerals such as Bauxite and Coal.
  • Vegetation –
    • Dominated by Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous forests, primarily Sal (Shorea robusta) and its associates.
    • Smaller patches of Northern Tropical Moist Deciduous forests are also present.
