National Board for Wildlife has constituted a team to inspect settlements of Periyar Tiger Reserve.
Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR):
- Location – Western Ghats of Kerala.
- Gets its name from the River Periyar
- Declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978.
- Main rivers – Pamba and Periyar
- Home to tribal communities such as Mannans and Palians.
- Terrain – Hilly and undulating topography
- Vegetation – Consists of tropical evergreen, semi- evergreen and moist deciduous.
- Flora – Teak, rosewood, jamun, bamboo etc.
- Fauna – Elephants, Sambar, Gaur, Tigers etc.
- Major 4 species of primates are found at Periyar – the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Gee’s Golden Langur, Common Langur and Bonnet Macaque.
- Habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr
