Andhra Pradesh Forest Department to prepare an inventory of land use adjacent to the Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary for declaring it an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) for conservation of the Kolleru Lake ecosystem.
About Kolleru Lake:
- One of the largest freshwater lake in the country.
- Location – Andhra Pradesh
- Located between the deltas of Krishna and Godavari rivers.
- One of the main hotspots for bird migratory route called Central Asian Flyway
- Declared as wildlife sanctuary.
- Declared as a ‘Ramsar Convention’ site in 2002.
- Lake is fed directly by the seasonal Budameru and Tammileru rivers
Kolleru Wildlife Sanctuary:
- Indicator Species: Grey pelican
- Forest Type: A wetland marsh habitat
- Fauna – Migratory birds like Glossy ibis, Open billed stork, Purple moorhen, Painted storks, Pied avocet, Marbled teal, Common redshank, etc.
