Chhattisgarh approves a proposal to notify Guru Ghasidas Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve (TR)
Guru Ghasidas Tamor Pingla Tiger Reserve:
- Chhattisgarh’s 4th Tiger Reserve.
- Other 3 Tiger Reserves – Indravati, Udanti-Sitanadi and Achanakmar.
- It will be 3rd largest Tiger Reserve in the country.
- First 2 Tiger Reserves in terms of area – Nagarjunsagar Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh) followed by Manas (Assam)
Guru Ghasidas National Park:
- Located on – Chhota Nagpur plateau and Baghelkhand plateau
- Falls under Son drainage basin
- Vegetation – Moist deciduous with moderately dense forest
Tiger Reserves:
- Notified by – State Governments on advise of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)
- Notified under – Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972
- 2 components of TR –
- Core or critical tiger habitat – Have the legal status of a national park or a sanctuary,
- Buffer or peripheral area – A mix of forest and non-forest land and a lesser degree of habitat protection is required
- Alteration in the boundaries of a tiger reserve – Shall be made only on a recommendation of the Tiger Conservation Authority and the approval of the National Board for Wild Life.
- State Government shall de-notify a tiger reserve, in case of public interest with the approval of the Tiger Conservation Authority and the National Board for Wild Life.
