Context:
2030 Global Forest Vision: Priority Actions for Governments in 2025 was released on March 19, 2025 by the Forest Declaration Assessment ahead of World Forest Day.
Forest Declaration Assessment (FDA):
- Established as New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF) Progress Assessment
- Launched at the 2014 Climate Summit by an alliance of governments, companies, indigenous groups, and NGOs.
- Established in 2015
- It is a civil society-led effort to track progress toward the NYDF’s10 voluntary goals.
- India has not yet endorsed the NYDF.
- Purpose –
- Promotes sustainable forest management to combat deforestation and climate change.
- Focus on integrating forest conservation into broader environmental agendas.
8 Priority Actions for 2030 Global Forest Vision (GFV):
- Mainstream forest-related goals into national climate and biodiversity policies and ensure their inclusion in outcomes of UNFCCC COP30.
- Collaborate to ensure global trade is legal and free of activities causing deforestation, land-use conversion, or forest degradation.
- Substantially increase investments in forest conservation, guided by the 2024 Forest & Climate Leaders’ Statement on Forest Carbon Payments and Credits.
- Protect and ensure the land rights of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and Local Communities (LCs).
- Mandate governments and financial regulators to evaluate and mitigate forest-related risks within financial institutions.
- Redirect harmful subsidies toward initiatives supporting sustainable food systems, bioeconomy transitions, and responsible forest management.
- Strengthen governance within land-use sectors to align with international commitments and standards.
- Enhance fiscal flexibility by recognizing the natural capital of forests as assets in debt management frameworks.
