Context:
CDRI announces $8 Million funding to Small Island Developing States as a part of Infrastructure for Resilient Island States Programme (IRIS).
IRIS:
- Launched at – COP26 of the UNFCCC, held in Glasgow, UK.
- 1st major initiative by the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) started by India in 2019.
- Aim – To provide technical support and promote disaster and climate resilience of infrastructure assets in small island nations.
- Contributes to the UN’s SAMOA Pathway (SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action) initiative.
- SAMOA – Aims to improve resilience of SIDS infrastructure to climate change and disasters, etc.
- Supported by countries like UK, Australia etc.
SIDS:
- Group of 39 States and 18 Associate Members of United Nations regional commissions.
- Geographical regions in which SIDS are located – Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic, Indian Ocean and South China Sea (AIS).
- SIDS were recognized as a special case both for their environment and development at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- For SIDS, the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)—the ocean under their control—is, on average, 28 times the country’s land mass.
