CoPs of BRS Conventions concluded at Geneva
BRS Conferences of the Parties (CoPs):
- Held every two years to enhance global action on hazardous chemicals and waste management.
- India is a party to all three conventions.
- Basel Convention (1989, Switzerland; enforced in 1992) –
- Focuses on reducing hazardous waste generation and ensuring environmentally sound waste management.
- Establishes a regulatory framework for permissible cross-border waste transfers, restricting movements that violate environmental principles.
- Rotterdam Convention (1998, Netherlands; enforced in 2004) –
- Encourages shared responsibility and cooperation in international trade involving hazardous chemicals and pesticides.
- Aims to protect human health and the environment through a prior informed consent procedure.
- Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) (2001, Sweden; enforced in 2004) –
- A global treaty aimed at eliminating harmful POPs, known as the “Dirty Dozen.”
- Supports transition to safer alternatives and targets additional pollutants for regulatory action.
