  • Significance –
    • A unit of the Earth System Science Organisation (ESSO)
    • Permanent member of the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO
    • Founding member of the Indian Ocean Global Ocean Observing System (IOGOOS) and the Partnership for Observing the Oceans (POGO).
  • Annual award announced on the birth anniversary (23rd January) of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose
  • Honours individuals and organizations for their contributions to disaster management in India.
