Cali Fund

Cali Fund was launched at the COP16 to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

  • Aim – To boost biodiversity finance for the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits from the use of Digital Sequence Information on Genetic Resources (DSI).
    • DSI is the data from DNA or RNA that can be stored digitally.
  • Objectives
  • Managed by – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
  • Hosted by the Multi-Partner Trust Fund Office (MPTFO).
  • The Cali Fund Secretariat is hosted by the CBD Secretariat.
  • Funding Mechanism – Receives contributions from private sector entities making commercial use of DSI.
  • BeneficiariesAt least 50% of the resources are allocated to the self-identified needs of indigenous peoples and local communities, including women and youth.
  • Exemptions – Academic institutions, public databases, public research institutions, and companies not relying on DSI are exempt from contributions to the Cali Fund.
