Sugar output is expected to experience a slight dip due to the increasing demand for ethanol.

Sugarcane Cultivation:

  • Temperature: Between 21-27°C
  • Climate: Hot and humid
  • Rainfall: Around 75-100 cm.
  • Soil Type: Deep rich loamy soil [Can be grown on all varieties of soils ranging from sandy loam to clay loam]
  • Top Sugarcane Producing States: Uttar Pradesh >Maharashtra>Karnataka (as on May 2023)
  • Main source of – Sugar, gur (jaggery), khandsari and molasses.

Determination of Sugarcane Prices:

  • Determined by – Central and the State Governments.
  • Central Government: Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP)
    • Determined on the recommendation of – Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP)
    • Announced by – Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) [chaired by the Prime Minister of India]
    • FRP is based on – Rangarajan Committee report
  • State Government: State Advised Prices (SAP)[SAP is generally higher than FRP]
    • Announced by – Governments of key sugarcane producing states.
