State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024 report released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

  • World fisheries and aquaculture production hit a new high in 2022 at 223.2 million tonnes.
  • For the 1st time, aquaculture surpassed capture fisheries as the main producer of aquatic animals.
  • India’s position –
    • With 8% of total production, India ranked 2nd in aquatic animals production.
    • Ranked 1st in Inland fisheries production
  • Fish producing – 3rd largest
  • Aquaculture production – 2nd largest
  • Blue Revolution –Initiative to improve the performance of fisheries sector
  • Government Initiatives –
    • Sagar Parikrama – For developing fishing villages, and upgrading infrastructure such as fishing harbors and fish landing centers.
    • Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF)
    • Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana
  • Inland fisheries contribute to 70% of the total fish production
  • Top Producing States – Andhra Pradesh followed by West Bengal.
