World Spice Organization suggests greater value addition in spices to achieve $10B export target

  • India is the world’s largest spice producer and consumer.
  • Leading States in terms of production – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra etc.
  • India is largest exporter of spices
    • Chilli was the most exported spice from India (2021-22).
    • Major Export Destinations – China, USA, Bangladesh, Thailand, UAE, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, UK etc.
  • Initiatives undertaken – Spice Board of India, SPICED etc.
  • Statutory Body constituted in 1987 under the Spices Board Act 1986.
  • Headquarters – Kochi, Kerala
  • Role – Autonomous body responsible for the export promotion of the 52 scheduled spices and development of Cardamom.
  • Ministry – Ministry of Commerce & Industry
