Recently, the platinum jubilee of the Central Silk Board was celebrated.

  • A statutory body established in 1948
  • Operates under – Ministry of Textiles.
  • Mandate –
    • Advises the government all matters related to sericulture and the silk industry.
    • Responsible for the standardization of various production processes.
  • Headquarters – Bengaluru.
  • Global Standing – India is the 2nd largest silk producer in the world, contributing 42% of global production as of 2023.
  • Regional Contribution – Karnataka is the leading state, contributing around 32% of India’s total silk production, followed by Andhra Pradesh.
  • Famous silk weaving enclaves – Kancheepuram, Arni (Tamil Nadu) Dharmavaram (Andhra Pradesh)
  • Types of silk produced in India – Mulberry, Eri, Tasar, and Muga.
    • Except for mulberry, other non-mulberry varieties of silks are wild silks, known as vanya silks.
  • Govt initiative – ‘Silk Samagra’, aCentral Sector Schemefor the development of sericulture in the country.
