  • An under-construction multi-purpose irrigation project
  • Location – Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Accorded National project status by the Union Government of India.
  • Objectives –
    • Development of irrigation, hydropower and drinking water facilities in East Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, West Godavari and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh.
    • Implements the Godavari-Krishna link under the Interlinking of rivers project.
    • Envisages the transfer of surplus Godavari water to river Krishna which will be shared between Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
  • Largest Peninsular river system.
  • Also known as – Dakshin Ganga.
  • Origin – Rises from Trimbakeshwar in the Western Ghats in the Maharashtra region
  • Drainage into – Bay of Bengal.
  • River basin extends over – Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Karnataka, Puducherry.
  • Tributaries –
    • Right Bank – Pravara, Manjira and Maner
    • Left Bank – Purna, Pranhita, Indravathi and Sabari
