Polavaram Irrigation Project:
- An under-construction multi-purpose irrigation project
- Location – Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh.
- Accorded National project status by the Union Government of India.
- Objectives –
- Development of irrigation, hydropower and drinking water facilities in East Godavari, Vishakhapatnam, West Godavari and Krishna districts of Andhra Pradesh.
- Implements the Godavari-Krishna link under the Interlinking of rivers project.
- Envisages the transfer of surplus Godavari water to river Krishna which will be shared between Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Godavari River:
- Largest Peninsular river system.
- Also known as – Dakshin Ganga.
- Origin – Rises from Trimbakeshwar in the Western Ghats in the Maharashtra region
- Drainage into – Bay of Bengal.
- River basin extends over – Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Karnataka, Puducherry.
- Tributaries –
- Right Bank – Pravara, Manjira and Maner
- Left Bank – Purna, Pranhita, Indravathi and Sabari
