Cabinet approves revised national program for dairy development

  • Central Sector Scheme, initiated in 2014 and restructured in 2021.
  • Total budget – ₹2790 crore (15th Finance Commission cycle 2021-22 to 2025-26).
    • Revised NPDD includes an additional ₹1000 crore.
  • Implemented by – Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying.
  • Objectives
    • Formation of 10,000 new Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCSs).
    • Strengthening milk procurement and processing in the North Eastern Region (NER).
    • Establishment of 2 Milk Producer Companies (MPCs) with dedicated grant support.
    • Creation of an additional 3.2 lakh direct and indirect jobs, with 70% of roles aimed at women in the dairy sector.
  • Key Components
    • Component A – Improving dairy infrastructure in remote and backward regions.
      • Focus – Formation of DCSs and MPCs, establishment of milk chilling plants, milk testing labs, and certification systems.
    • Component B – JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency)-assisted Dairying Through Cooperatives (DTC).
      • Focus – Sustainable development of dairy cooperatives in 9 states by enhancing production, processing, and marketing infrastructure.
