Context:

A total of 24.82 crore individuals in India escaped multidimensional poverty over the last nine years

National Multidimensional Poverty Index:

  • Released by – NITI Aayog
  • Based on – National Family Health Survey
  • Dimensions covered – Health, Education, and Standard of living
  • New Findings – All 12 MPI indicators show significant signs of improvement.
    • Largest Decline – Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh
    • Poorer states record faster decline in poverty – indicating reduction in disparities
    • India is likely to achieve SDG Target 1.2 (reducing multidimensional poverty by at least half) much ahead of 2030.

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index:

  • Released by – UNDP and Oxford Poverty and Human Development Index
  • Launched in – 2010
  • India’s position – India has by far the largest number of poor people worldwide at 22.8 crore, followed by Nigeria at 9.6 crore.
