Context:
5th World Coffee Conference was inaugurated in India by ICO, in association with Coffee Board of India which is being held for the first time in an Asian coffee-producing country.
About ICO:
- Established in 1963 under the aegis of the United Nations and following the approval of the first International Coffee Agreement in 1962.
- Headquarters – London, United Kingdom
- Represents 93% of world coffee production and 63% of world consumption.
- Objectives –
- To strengthen the global coffee sector
- To promote sustainable expansion in a market-based environment for the benefit of all actors in the Global Coffee Value Chain (G-CVC).
- Only intergovernmental organization for coffee, bringing together exporting and importing Governments.
- Membership: 43 exporting members (including India) and 6 importing members.
Coffee Board:
- Established through a constitutional act “Coffee Act VII of 1942”
- Ministry – Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- Members – 33 members including the Chairman
- HQ – Bangalore.
- International Coffee Day – 1st October.
