Centre urged to get environmental clearance for Kalasa Banduri Nala project
Kalasa Banduri Nala project:
- Construction of a canal system to divert water from the Mahadayi River, located in Goa, to the Malaprabha River basin in Karnataka.
- Kalasa and Banduri are streams of Mahadayi
- Malaprabha River – A tributary of Krishna river
- Aim – To meet the drinking water needs of Karnataka’s parched districts.
- Issue – Remains a disputed project between Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.
Mahadayi river:
- Origin – Western Ghats, from the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka
- Course – Flows towards Goa before joining the Arabian Sea
- Also called as – Mandovi in Goa
- Major Tributaries – Kalasa Nala, Banduri Nala, Surla Nala, Haltar Nala, Poti Nala, Mahadayi Nala, Pansheer Nala, Bail Nala, Andher Nala.
- Other significance – Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is located on the island of Chorao in the Mandovi river.
