India Launches DHRUVA Policy to Standardize Digital Addresses through Geo-Coded Infrastructure

  • A national-level Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) designed to provide every home in India with a unique digital address
  • Introduced by – Department of Posts (DoP)
  • Objective –
    • Establish address information management as a critical public infrastructure.
    • Enhance governance, service delivery, and user experience through digitalization.
  • Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN) – A 10-digit alphanumeric code mapping geographic coordinates (latitude & longitude).
    • Developed using 4×4 meter grids across India.
    • Uniquely identifies locations with geospatial data.
  • Digital Address Layer – User-centric & consent-based system built on DIGIPIN.
    • Allows individuals to create customized labels for their DIGIPIN.
    • Enables descriptive address representation.
