Context:
Union Minister for Civil Aviation inaugurated the Digi Yatra facility for nine airports, bringing the total number of Digi Yatra-enabled airports to 24.
Digi Yatra:
- Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel (BEST) experience based on Facial Recognition Technology, rolled out in December 2022.
- Part of – Digital India’s vision to transform the nation into a digitally empowered society.

Features of Digi Yatra:
- Facial Recognition at Checkpoints – Passengers’ faces are scanned at entry gates, security checks, and boarding gates, eliminating the need for physical documents.
- DigiYatra App – Passengers register on the app using Aadhaar credentials.
- Boarding passes are scanned via QR code or Bar code, and credentials are shared with the airport.
- Enhanced Security – Passenger data is validated with the Airlines Departure Control System, ensuring only designated passengers enter the terminal.
- Reduced Queuing Time – Minimizes the need for manual checks, leading to faster processing and shorter queues.
- Real-Time Information – Provides airport operators with real-time data on passenger load, aiding in better resource planning.
- Operational Efficiency – Airlines can track passenger positions within the airport, improving coordination and efficiency.
- Voluntary Participation – The program is entirely voluntary, allowing passengers to opt-in based on their comfort with the technology.
- Benefits –
- Lower cost operations by removing redundancies at checkpoints and enhancing resource utilization.
- No central storage of passengers’ Personally Identifiable Information.
- All passenger data is encrypted and stored securely in their smartphones, shared only temporarily with origin airport, and destroyed within 24 hours of departure.
