The results of the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) for 2023-24 have been released.

  • Released by: National Statistics Office, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
    • Reference Period: October 2023 – September 2024.
  • About ASUSE:
    • Objective: Measure various economic and operational characteristics of unincorporated non-agricultural establishments in manufacturing, trade, and other services sector (excluding construction).
    • Purpose: Input for policymaking, supporting national accounts statistics & requirements of key ministries, data-driven decisions, etc.
  • Key Findings:
    • Number of Establishments: Increased to 7.34 crore, a 12.84% growth from 2022-23.
    • Female-owned Proprietary Establishments: Increased to 26.2% from 22.9% in 2022-23, indicating a rise in female entrepreneurship.
    • Gross Value Added (GVA): Contribution grew by 16.52% (at current price), driven by growth in other services sector.
    • Employment: Sector employed more than 12 crore workers.GVA per Worker: Increased by 5.62% (in current prices), a measure of labour productivity.
    • Internet Usage: Percentage of establishments using the internet grew to 26.7% from 21.1% in 2022-23, reflecting a trend toward digital adoption.
  • Significance of Unincorporated Non-Agricultural Sector:
    • Contributes to employment generation & GDP.
    • Promotes entrepreneurship.
    • Backbone for the incorporated sector by reinforcing its role in the domestic supply value chain, etc.
  • A producer unit which is not incorporated as a legal entity separate from the owner.
  • Assets: Belong to the owners, not the enterprise.
  • Transactions and Contracts: Cannot engage in transactions or enter into contractual relationships with other economic units.
  • Liabilities: Cannot incur liabilities on their own behalf.
  • Owner’s Liability: Owners are personally liable for any debts or obligations incurred during production.
