Jute:
- A Kharif crop
- Natural renewable and biodegradable fiber.
- Also known as – Golden fibre.
- Climatic Conditions –
- Grows well on alluvial soil
- Requires high temperature, heavy rainfall and humid climate
Production in India:
- 1st jute mill established at – West Bengal, on the river Hooghly
- Leading states – West Bengal, Assam, Orissa, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura and Meghalaya.
- India is the largest producer of raw jute and jute goods
- 2nd largest exporter after Bangladesh.
- National Jute Board, Ministry of Textiles, acts as the apex body for promotion of the products in India and abroad.
