Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024 | Dr Verghese Kurian

Release of Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024 on the occasion of National Milk Day 2024 (November 26) to celebrate birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien.

  • Milk Production:
    • Total Production: India produced 239.30 million tonnes of milk in 2023-24, marking a 3.78% increase from the previous year.
    • Global Position: India remains the world’s largest milk producer.Top States: Uttar Pradesh (16.21%), Rajasthan (14.51%), and Madhya Pradesh (8.91%)
    • Per Capita Availability – Increased to 471 grams per day in 2023-24 from 459 grams per day in 2022-23.
  • Egg Production:
    • Total Production: Egg production reached 142.77 billion units in 2023-24, showing a 6.8% growth over the last decade.
    • Global Position: India is the 2nd-largest producer of eggs.
    • Top States: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana
  • Meat Production:
    • Total Production: Meat production rose to 10.25 million tonnes in 2023-24, a 4.95% increase from the previous year.
    • Top States – West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra are major contributors
  • Wool Production:
    • Total Production: Wool production totaled 33.69 million kg in 2023-24, showing a modest growth of 0.22%3.
    • Top States – Rajasthan accounts for nearly half of the total wool output, followed by Jammu & Kashmir
  • Known as the ‘Milkman of India’ and ‘Father of White Revolution in India’
  • Influenced by the cooperative movement led by Tribhuvandas Patel, he established the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd. (KDCMPUL) in 1950, which later became known as Amul.
  • National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) – Founded the NDDB in 1965 and served as its chairman until 1998.
    • The NDDB played a crucial role in implementing Operation Flood.
  • Initiated in 1970, Operation Flood was the world’s largest dairy development program, transforming India from a milk-deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer.
  • Curated the Anand Cooperative Model that involved farmers managing their own procurement, processing, and marketing of milk with professional support.
    • The model’s success led to its replication across India, contributing significantly to the White Revolution.
  • Revolutionized the edible oil sector by introducing the Dhara brand, reducing India’s dependence on oil imports.
  • Institute of Rural Management (IRMA) – Established IRMA in 1979 to provide management training and research support to cooperatives.
  • Awards and Honors
    • Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership
    • Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
    • World Food Prize Laureate
