Context:
In response to objections raised by political parties in Jammu and Kashmir, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) clarified that the current road project to the Amarnath cave shrine aims to widen the tracks for pedestrian traffic, taking into consideration environmental concerns.
About Border Roads Organisation:
- A force dedicated to road construction, offering assistance to the Indian Armed Forces.
- A statutory body under the Ministry of Defence.
- Formation – 1960
- It is responsible for the development and upkeep of road networks in India’s border regions and neighboring countries.
- Operating in 19 states and three union territories, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
- Extends its infrastructure operations to countries like Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan, and Sri Lanka.
BRO also played a vital role in reconstruction work in the aftermath of the devastating 2004 Tsunami in Tamil Nadu.
About Amarnath cave shrine:
- A Hindu shrine
- Location – Sind Valley, Jammu and Kashmir
- Notable religious attraction – natural ice Lingam associated with Lord Shiva. When the ice Lingam is present, the temple is only accessible for a brief time each year.
