Decarbonisation

Context:

“Towards Decarbonising Transport 2023: A Stocktake on Sectoral Ambition in G20” report by NITI Aayog examines the present status of decarbonization and climate goals in the transportation sectors of G20 nations.

Decarbonisation is the term used for removal or reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) output into the atmosphere.

Report highlights:

  • No Overall Emissions or Energy Targets for Transport Sector:India has not established any comprehensive emissions or energy targets for the transport sector, despite its objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
  • Projected Increase in Transport-Sector Emissions: India’s transport-sector emissions could experience a significant surge of 65% by 2030 and a staggering 197% by 2050 when compared to the levels recorded in 2020.
  • Main Contributors to Sector Emissions: Road followed by rail transport.
  • Necessity for Transport Sector Decarbonization –
    • Globally, India is 3rd most CO2 emitting sector.
    • High dependence on fossil fuels of the sector leads to exploitation of fossil fuels.
    • To meet nationally determined contributions (NDCs) targets of India i.e., reduce emissions intensity of its GDP by 45% by 2030 etc.
