Context:
- PM inaugurated Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI Project).
- PM also dedicated a Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD).
- For the 1st time since independence, Lakshadweep will be connected through Submarine Optic Fibre Cable that will ensure a paradigm shift in its communication infrastructure.
About KLI project:
- Submarine cable connectivity extended to 11 Lakshadweep Islands – Kavaratti, Agatti, Amini, Kadmat, Chetlet, Kalpeni, Minicoy, Androth, Kiltan, Bangaram and Bitra has been.
- Funded by – Universal Services Obligation Fund (Digital Bharat Nidhi), Department of Telecommunication.
- Project Executing Agency – Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)
Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD):
- Purpose – for conversion of seawater into potable water at Kadmat island, Lakshadweep.
- A process under which warm surface seawater is flash evaporated at low pressure and the vapor is condensed with cold deep seawater.
- Developed and Commissioned by – National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Ministry of Earth Sciences
Earlier 3 LTTD plants developed and demonstrated in Lakshadweep’s Kavaratti, Agati, and Minicoy Islands.
