About Lambani Embroidery:
- Named after Lambani Tribe
- An amalgam of pattern darning, mirror work, cross stitch, and overlaid and quilting stitches with borders of “Kangura” patchwork.
- Done on loosely woven dark blue or red handloom base fabric.
- Received status of Geographic Indication (GI) tag in 2010 from Karnataka.
About Lambanis Community:
- Also called Lambadis or Banjaras.
- Nomadic tribes who arrived from Afghanistan to India,
- Areas spread – Rajasthan (Mewar region), Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
- Language – ‘GorBoli’ (also called ‘Lambadi’) – It has no script
Geographical Indication (GI) Tag:
- An insignia on products having a unique geographical origin and evolution over centuries with regard to its special quality or reputed attributes.
- Nodal Agency: Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
- Responsibility – Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks, (Registrar of Geographical Indications)
- GI tag in India is governed by Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999.
- Recognized as a part of intellectual property rights (IPRs) under Articles 1(2) and 10 of the Paris Convention
- Defined under Article 22 (1) of the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement.
- It is primarily an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods).
- Validity: 10 years (renewable)
- GI products in India: 478 (March 2023)
