About Census:
- It is a process of collecting, compiling, analyzing, evaluating, publishing and disseminating statistical data regarding the population.
- Conducted by – Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India
- Ministry – Ministry of Home Affairs
- The Decennial population census is conducted every 10 years.
- Census is a Union subject under Article 246 of India Constitution.
- Census Facts:
- 1st synchronous census in India – 1881 by W.C. Plowden (Census Commissioner of India).
- 1st census for Post-Independent India – 1951.
- Recent census – 2011 (15th National Census)
National Population Register (NPR):
- A database containing a list of all usual residents of the country.
- A usual resident – a person who has resided for 6 months or more in a particular place and wants to reside for another 6 months or more in the same particular place.
- Collected during the “house-listing” phase of the census.
- Ministry – Ministry of Home Affairs
- NPR was first prepared in 2010 and updated in 2015.
