Panamalai Paintings

1,300-year-old paintings at Talagirishwara temple are fading, as per reports.

  • State – Tamil Nadu
  • These mural paintings were created after covering stonewalls with a paste made of limestone and sand.
  • These bear a close resemblance to paintings in Ajantha and Chithannavasal.
  • Temple was constructed by – Pallava king Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha)

Seismic Swarms

Iceland has been hit by more than 5500 small earthquakes.

  • These are sequences of many earthquakes that occur in a relatively short period without a specific main shock.
  • Observed in volcanic environments, hydrothermal systems, and other active geothermal areas.
  • Iceland – Europe’s largest and most active volcanic region due to its presence on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Pichwai (pichvai) Painting

Chennai hosts an art exhibit showcasing Pichwai, some dating back 350 years.

  • Origin – Nathdwara near Udaipur, Rajasthan.
  • Meaning – ‘pichh’ meaning back, and ‘wai’, meaning textile hanging.
  • Subjects – Lord Krishna’s life, Sharad Purnima, Raas Leela, Diwali and Holi
  • Made by – Pushti Marg sect (founded by Shri Vallabhacharya in the 16th Century)
