National Mission for Clean Ganga | River Cities Alliance

National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved an annual master plan for the River Cities Alliance (RCA)

  • Established in – 2011 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
  • Functions under the National Ganga Council (replaced the National Ganga River Basin Authority).
  • Created in 2016 under the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management) Authorities Order, 2016
  • Headed by – Prime Minister.
  • Aims and Objectives –
    • Prevent, control, and abate environmental pollution in the Ganga river.
    • Adopt a river basin approach for the rejuvenation of the Ganga.
  • Structure – 2-Tier Management comprising a Governing Council and an Executive Committee.
    • Executive Committee – Coordinates, supervises, and deliberates on funding for Namami Ganga projects, meeting monthly.
  • Launched by – Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
  • A platform for Indian river cities to collaborate on sustainable urban river management.
  • Key Themes – RCA focuses on 3 main areas – Networking, Capacity Building, and Technical Support.
  • Initially started with cities in the Ganga basin, the RCA now includes cities beyond this region.
  • Collaborators – National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the National Institute for Urban Affairs (NIUA)
  • Objectives –
    • Information Exchange – Provide a platform for member cities to discuss and share information on sustainable urban river management.
    • Policy Adoption – Work towards adopting and localizing national policies and instruments related to river management.
    • Urban River Management Plans – Develop city-specific strategies and plans for sustainable urban river management.
