Context:
Drying of Tamulidoba Beel in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a growing concern.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (PWS):
- Location – Assam
- Consists of – Rajamayong Reserve Forest and Pobitora Reserve Forest
- River – On the southern bank of Brahmaputra River
- As part of Indian Rhinoceros Vision, 2020 (IRV), 8 Rhinos were translocated from PWS into Manas National Park.
- Significance –
- Highest density of Greater One Horned Rhinoceros in the world
- Important Bird Area as per Birdlife International
- Often referred as ‘Mini Kaziranga’ – Similarity of landscape, floral, and faunal distribution
- About 72% of area consists of wet savannah and remaining area is covered by water bodies
- Water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant, acts a major threat to the area
- Tamulidoba Beel – A famous wetland in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
