Union Minister for Women and Child Development is leading India’s delegation at the 69th session of the CSW at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.

  • Origin – Established in 1946 as a subsidiary body of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
  • Membership – Comprises 45 member states elected by ECOSOC, representing different regional groups.
    • Members are elected for 4-year periods.
    • India is a member from 2021 to 2025.
  • Meets annually at the UN Headquarters in New York.
  • Objectives –
    • Promote Gender Equality: Enhance women’s empowerment globally.
    • Policy Formulation: Develop policies, standards, and conventions to protect women’s rights.
    • Address Challenges: Tackle discrimination, economic inequality, and violence against women.
  • Major Initiatives of CSW:
    • Declaration on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (1967) – Laid the groundwork for legal frameworks on women’s rights.
    • Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) (1979) – A legally binding treaty, signed and ratified by India, ensuring women’s rights.
    • Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995): A landmark document guiding global gender equality efforts.
