Highlights of the report:
- Energy Demand Growth – Global energy demand increased by 4.3% in 2024.
- China’s Consumption – China has overtaken both the US and the EU, emerging as the highest consumer of electricity.
- CO2 Emissions – Global CO2 emissions from electricity generation are expected to stabilize from 2025 to 2027 after a 1% rise in 2024.
- Renewable Energy Contribution – Renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, and hydropower, are anticipated to account for approximately 95% of the electricity demand growth between 2025 and 2027.
India-specific Findings:
- Demand Surge – India’s electricity demand surged by 5.8% in 2024.
- Thermal Power Capacity – India’s thermal power capacity is expected to increase to 283 GW by 2032.
- Coal Dominance – Coal remains the dominant energy source, comprising 74% of India’s power mix in 2024.
- Renewable Energy Growth – The share of renewable energy in India’s power mix is projected to rise from 21% in 2024 to 27% by 2027, with solar photovoltaic (PV) leading this expansion.
- Nuclear Power Expansion – Nuclear power generation saw a 13% increase in 2024.
