Padma Awards

The Centre has announced Padma Awards 2025 on Republic day.

  • One of the Highest civilian honours of India
  • Announced annually on the eve of Republic Day
  • Interrupted years – 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997
  • Awardees are presented a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion.
  • Categories of awards – Padma VibhushanPadma Bhushan and Padma Shri
  • Awardees are decided by Padma Awards Committee recommendations
  • Maximum per year – 120 awards
    • This does not include Padma awards presented to foreigners and also those awarded posthumously.
  • Nomination – open to public including self-nomination.
  • Exceptions –
    • Government servants including those working with PSUs, except doctors and scientists, are not eligible
    • Generally, not conferred posthumously (after once death) but in highly deserving cases, the Government can decide.
    • Can be conferred on a person only where a period of at least 5 years has elapsed since conferment of the earlier Padma award.
  • In terms of Article 18 (1) of the Constitution, the award cannot be used as a prefix or suffix to the recipient’s name.
