Doctors ask NMC for a simpler way to register as they are finding it difficult to enter details in the National Medical Register (NMR).

  • Established in 2020.
  • Statutory body under National Medical Commission Act, 2019
  • Apex regulatory body for medical education and practice in India.
  • Replaces the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI)
  • 4 autonomous boards –
    • Under-Graduate Medical Education Board
    • Post-Graduate Medical Education Board
    • Medical Assessment and Rating Board
    • Ethics and Medical Registration Board
  • Composition – 25-member body
  • Appointment – Majority nominated by the Central government.
  • Those nominated by the Central government, cannot be renominated.
  • Tenure of members – 4 years (except for part-time members whose tenure is 2 years).
  • Has 11 part-time members representing states or state medical councils.
  • Any decision requires approval of the majority (minimum 13 out of 25) of the Commission.
  • Meeting Mandate – Every quarter
  • Brought in by the Union Health Ministry to have a consolidated list of allopathic doctors.
  • Maintained by – National Medical Commission (NMC)
  • Acts as a centralised repository that contains the name, address, and qualifications of all licensed medical practitioners.
  • It also verifies the authenticity of doctors using Aadhaar IDs.
  • All doctors registered on the Indian Medical Register (IMR) must re-register on the NMR, as per the Government order.
  • Allows users to search for registered medical practitioners in India.
  • While some data on the NMR are visible to the public, other data are only visible to certain organisations and individuals.
