Global Hunger Index (GHI), 2024 ranks India under ‘serious’ category.

  • 1st introduced in 2006.
  • Annually published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.
  • 4 component indicators –
    • Undernourishment based on caloric intake
    • Child (under age five) stunting based on height
    • Child (under age five) wasting based on weight
    • Child mortality (before age five)
  • Scoring – 100-point scale (where 0 is the best (no hunger) and 100 is the worst)
  • Global hunger statistics – Current GHI score stands at 18.3, showing a slight improvement from 2016’s score of 18.8.
  • 2.8 billion people worldwide cannot afford a healthy diet.
  • Sub-Saharan Africa records highest rates of malnutrition and child mortality globally
    • Ongoing conflicts in Somalia and Sudan exacerbate hunger crises.
  • India ranks 105th out of 127th countries, falling under “serious” category with 41 other nations, including Pakistan and Afghanistan.
  • India’s GHI score has fallen since 2000, however, child wasting and stunting remain very high.
    • Approximately 35.5% of children under five are stunted, indicating chronic undernutrition, while 18.7% are wasted, a sign of acute malnutrition.
  • Around 13.7% of the overall population suffers from undernourishment, which remains a persistent issue.
