Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU)

India participated in 44th Session of CCNFSDU, held in Dresden, Germany.

  • One of the active Codex Committee.
  • Functions –
    • Studies specific nutritional problems assigned to it by Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) and advise CAC on general nutrition issues.
    • Drafts general provisions, as appropriate, concerning the nutritional aspects of all foods.
    • Develop standards, guidelines or related texts for foods for special dietary uses, in cooperation with other committees where necessary.
    • Endorse provisions on nutritional aspects proposed for inclusion Codex standards, guidelines and related text.
  • India’s RepresentativesFood Safety and Standards Authority of India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Women and Child Development
  • Joint Statement on Healthy Diet Principles – During the session, FAO/WHO announced plans for a Joint Statement on Healthy Diet Principles.
  • An international food standards body established in 1963.
  • Established jointly by – WHO and FAO.
  • Headquarters – Rome
  • Members – 189 members (including India).
  • Objective – To protect consumer’s health and ensure fair practices in food trade.
  • Codex Alimentarius (Food Code) – A collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice adopted by the CAC.
  • Codex standards are voluntary.
  • CAC standards are recognized by the World Trade Organization (WTO) for resolving trade disputes.
