National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds (NMEO-Oilseeds):
- Aim – To boost domestic oilseed production and achieve self-reliance in edible oils and increase farmers’ incomes.
- Current Scenario – Imports account for 57% of India’s domestic demand for edible oils.
- Focus Areas –
- Increasing production of Primary Oilseed Crops – Rapeseed-Mustard, Groundnut, Soybean, Sunflower, and Sesamum.
- Increasing efficiency of Secondary Sources – Cottonseed, Rice Bran, and Tree Borne Oils.
- Approach –
- High-Yielding Varieties – Adoption of high-yielding, high oil content seed varieties.
- Extended Cultivation – Utilize rice and potato fallow lands, promote intercropping, and crop diversification.
- Value Chain Clusters – Develop clusters across 347 districts to provide access to high-quality seeds, training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and advisory services on weather and pest management.
- Timely Seed Availability – Ensure timely availability of quality seeds.
- SATHI Portal – Online 5-Year Rolling Seed Plan introduced through the SATHI (Seed Authentication, Traceability & Holistic Inventory) Portal.
- Enable states to establish advance tie-ups with seed-producing agencies (cooperatives, FPOs, and government or private seed corporations).
- New Seed Hubs – Set up new seed hubs and seed storage units.
- Duration – 7 years (2024-25 to 2030-31)
