Context:
Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) released for FY 2022-23.
ASI Highlights:
- Manufacturing Gross Value Added (GVA) – Increased by 7.3% in current prices during 2022-23 compared to 2021-22.
- Maharashtra leads, followed by Gujarat in Manufacturing GVA.
- Growth in Economic Parameters – Exceeded pre-pandemic levels in absolute terms, including invested capital, GVA, employment, and wages.
- Manufacturing Sector Growth Drivers – Key sectors include Basic Metal, Coke & Refined Petroleum Products, and Food Products.
- Employment – Manufacturing employment rose by 7.4% in 2022-23 over the previous year.
- Tamil Nadu was the highest employing state, followed by Maharashtra.

- Collection of Statistics Act, 2008 has been amended in 2017 as Collection of Statistics (Amendment) Act, 2017 which extends the coverage to All India (earlier Jammu and Kashmir was exempted.)

- Industries Covered –
- Factories registered under the Factories Act, 1948 (those factories employing 10 or more workers using power; and those employing 20 or more workers without using power)
- Bidi and cigar manufacturing establishments under the Bidi & Cigar Workers (Conditions of Employment) Act, 1966.
- Electricity undertakings not registered with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
- Units with 100 or more employees registered in the Business Register of Establishments (BRE) maintained by the States.
