Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently said that India surpasses Japan to become 3rd largest power in Asia power index.

  • An Index ranking the relative power of states in Asia by measuring their resources and influence.
  • Initiated by – Lowy Institute in 2018
  • Evaluates 27 countries across the Asia-Pacific, focusing on their ability to shape and respond to geopolitical challenges.
  • Evaluation Criteria – The index uses 131 indicators across 8 thematic measures
    • Military capability and defense networks
    • Economic capability and relationships
    • Diplomatic and cultural influence
    • Resilience and future resources
  • India surpasses Russia and Japan due to dynamic growth, a youthful population, and an expanding economy.
  • India saw a 4.2 point increase in economic capability, driven by strong GDP growth and its position as the world’s 3rd largest economy in PPP terms.
  • An 8.2 point rise in future resources highlights India’s demographic advantage.
    • Unlike China and Japan, India’s youthful demographic is expected to drive continued economic expansion and workforce growth.
  • India’s influence in multilateral diplomacy and regional security is growing, bolstered by active participation in groups like the Quad and leadership in regional dialogues.
  • Defense deals, such as the BrahMos missile agreement with the Philippines, indicate India’s expanding geopolitical ambitions.
  • However, India’s ability to project power east of the Malacca Strait remains limited.
