Context:
Foundation stone laid for Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) terminal to be developed at Bogibeel (Dibrugarh).
About Bogibeel IWT terminal:
- Developed at the bank of the River Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh (National Waterways 2).
- Managed by – Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
About IWT:
- India has 111 officially declared National Waterways (NWs).
- Designated and managed by – Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
- Regulated by – National Waterways Act assists in the management and regulation of the waterways in a country.
About IWAI:
- A statutory body by Inland Waterways Authority of India Act, 1985
- Ministry: Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW)
- Head office: Noida.
- Responsibility – Development, maintenance, and regulation of the inland waterways in India.
About Riverine-based tourism Circuit:
- Primary objective: To enhance riverine tourism along Brahmaputra River.
- Aim – To connect 7 temples located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River namely
- Kamakhya
- Pandunath
- Ashwalknata
- Doul Govinda
- Umananda
- Chakreshwar
- Auniati Satra
- Collaboration between –
- Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI)
- Sagarmala Development Company Limited (SDCL)
- Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited (ATDC)
- Directorate of Inland Water Transport (DIWT) Assam
- It falls under the Sagarmala Programme.
