Context:

Foundation stone laid for Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) terminal to be developed at Bogibeel (Dibrugarh).

About Bogibeel IWT terminal:

  • Developed at the bank of the River Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh (National Waterways 2).
  • Managed by – Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).

About IWT:

  • India has 111 officially declared National Waterways (NWs).
  • Designated and managed by – Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
  • Regulated by – National Waterways Act assists in the management and regulation of the waterways in a country.

About IWAI:

  • A statutory body by Inland Waterways Authority of India Act, 1985
  • Ministry: Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW)
  • Head office: Noida.
  • Responsibility – Development, maintenance, and regulation of the inland waterways in India.

About Riverine-based tourism Circuit:

  • Primary objective: To enhance riverine tourism along Brahmaputra River.
  • Aim – To connect 7 temples located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River namely
    • Kamakhya
    • Pandunath
    • Ashwalknata
    • Doul Govinda
    • Umananda
    • Chakreshwar
    • Auniati Satra
  • Collaboration between –
    • Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI)
    • Sagarmala Development Company Limited (SDCL)
    • Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited (ATDC)
    • Directorate of Inland Water Transport (DIWT) Assam
  • It falls under the Sagarmala Programme.
