Context:

No emperor penguin chicks survived last year due to melting of Antarctic ice – a recent study. Researchers used satellite imagery to look at breeding colonies in a region near Antarctica’s Bellingshausen Sea.

About Emperor penguin 

  • Tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species
  • Endemic to Antarctica
  • The only penguin species that breeds during the Antarctic winter
  • The male and female are similar in plumage and size
  • Like all penguins, it is flightless

  • There are 18 species of penguins that live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • Only one species the Galápagos penguin is found north of the Equator.
  • All species are flightless.
  • Penguins are among the most social of all birds. All species of penguin are colonial, meaning that they live in large groups.
  • Penguins live primarily in Antarctic. They have a thick layer of blubber and dense feathers to keep them warm.
