Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change made it mandatory for all coal-based TPP to install FGD system.

  • Used to remove Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) from the flue gas emissions of coal-fired Thermal Power Plants (TPP).
  • Can remove over 90% of SO2.
  • 3 types of FGD systems – Dry Sorbent (Limestone) Injection, Wet Limestone Based, and Sea Water Based – are adopted worldwide.

Researchers found that after C. elegans worms ate a disease-causing bacteria, its children knew from birth to avoid making the same mistake

  • Group of primarily non-coding RNA (ncRNA) and generally contains 20 to 200 nucleotides.
  • ncRNA – RNA that does not encode a protein.
  • Ribonucleic acid (RNA) – Made up of 4 types of nucleotides – adenine (A), uracil (U), cytosine (C) or guanine (G).
    • They bind to other proteins and RNAs, and either enhance or reduce the expression of other genes

7th edition of Exercise ‘Shakti’ started in Meghalay

Scientists have found mass sea anemone bleaching off Agatti island, Lakshadweep.

  • Ocean-dwelling members of the phylum Cnidaria. 
  • Predatory animals and most species are found in coastal tropical waters.
  • Establish symbiotic relationships with green algae.
  • Also have a symbiotic relation with clownfish.

CCMB scientists find armoured sailfin catfish has spread to 60% of water bodies of Eastern Ghats

  • An Invasive Species originally from South America, posing a threat to native fish species in Eastern India.
  • Commonly referred to as – Rakashi or devil fish
  • Capable of walking on land
  • Introduced for its unique appearance and its ability to clean algal growth in tanks and aquaria
  • Exponential growth realised through a unique eDNA-based assessment
