FGD Technology (Flue Gas Desulphurisation)
Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change made it mandatory for all coal-based TPP to install FGD system.
- Used to remove Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) from the flue gas emissions of coal-fired Thermal Power Plants (TPP).
- Can remove over 90% of SO2.
- 3 types of FGD systems – Dry Sorbent (Limestone) Injection, Wet Limestone Based, and Sea Water Based – are adopted worldwide.
sRNA (Small Ribonucleic acid)
Researchers found that after C. elegans worms ate a disease-causing bacteria, its children knew from birth to avoid making the same mistake
- Group of primarily non-coding RNA (ncRNA) and generally contains 20 to 200 nucleotides.
- ncRNA – RNA that does not encode a protein.
- Ribonucleic acid (RNA) – Made up of 4 types of nucleotides – adenine (A), uracil (U), cytosine (C) or guanine (G).
- They bind to other proteins and RNAs, and either enhance or reduce the expression of other genes
Exercise Shakti
7th edition of Exercise ‘Shakti’ started in Meghalay
- Joint military exercise between India and France
Sea Anemone
Scientists have found mass sea anemone bleaching off Agatti island, Lakshadweep.
- Ocean-dwelling members of the phylum Cnidaria.
- Predatory animals and most species are found in coastal tropical waters.
- Establish symbiotic relationships with green algae.
- Also have a symbiotic relation with clownfish.
Armoured Sailfin Catfish
CCMB scientists find armoured sailfin catfish has spread to 60% of water bodies of Eastern Ghats
- An Invasive Species originally from South America, posing a threat to native fish species in Eastern India.
- Commonly referred to as – Rakashi or devil fish
- Capable of walking on land
- Introduced for its unique appearance and its ability to clean algal growth in tanks and aquaria
- Exponential growth realised through a unique eDNA-based assessment
