About National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN):

  • Established in 1980
  • Emerged in opposition to the ‘Shillong Accord’, signed by NNC (Naga National Council) and the Indian government.
  • Core Goal – Creation of a ‘Greater Nagaland.’
  • Manifesto – Rooted in Socialism for economic progress and a spiritual perspective named ‘Nagaland for Christ’
  • NSCN Factions – NSCN (K) and NSCN (I-M)

About Nagas:

  • Ethnic group in north-eastern India.
  • Various names – Noga, Naka, Hao, Chin, Naga
  • Belongs to the Indo-Mongoloid Family.
  • No caste system among the Nagas or anyone of the non-Naga tribes.
  • Major inhabited Areas – Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Myanmar.
  • 16 Naga tribes – Ao, Konyak, Sema, Chakhesang, Angami, Lotha, Sangtam, Phom, Chang, Kheimungan, Yimchunger, Zeilang, Rengma, Tikhir, Mokware, and Chirr.
  • 4 non-Naga tribes – Kuki, Kachari, Garo, Mikir. 

About Naga Ceasefire Agreement:

  • NSCN-IM initiated ceasefire in 1997 during peace talks.
  • 2015 – Framework agreement signed with NSCN-IM for Naga political issue.
  • NSCN-IM leaders –Isak ChishiS wu, Thuingaleng Muivah
  • Recognised Naga history, culture, and sentiments.
  • NSCN-IM acknowledges Indian political system.
  • Accord envisioned in October 2019 to address all Naga issues.
  • Centre entered into a one-year ceasefire agreement – 2021.
