Context:

Parliamentary Committee of Science and Technology reported NavIC will be integrated into Aadhaar enrolment devices.

About NavIC:

  • Objectives – To provide accurate real-time positioning and timing services to users in India as well as region extending up to 1500 km from its boundary.
  • Designed by – Indian Space Research Organisation
  • Consists of – A constellation of 7 satellites (Originally 8)
    • 3 satellites are in Geostationary Orbit (GEO)
    • 4 satellites are in Geosynchronous Orbit (GSO)
    • Each satellite has 3 rubidium clocks.
  • Recognised by International Maritime Organization –
    • As a part of the World-Wide Radio Navigation System (WWRNS) to operate in the Indian Ocean Region
  • 2 services –
    • Standard Position Service (SPS) for civilian users
    • Restricted Service (RS) for strategic users
  • Applications – Transportation (terrestrial, aerial and marine), Location based services, Personal mobility, Resource monitoring, Surveying and geodesy, Scientific research, Time dissemination and synchronisation, Safety-of-life alert dissemination, Banking etc.
  • Other Navigation Systems operational in the world –
    • 4 global systems: GPS (U.S), GLONASS (Russia), Galileo (European Union), BeiDou (China)
    • 2 regional systems: NavIC (India), Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (Japan)

About Aadhaar Card:

  • A 12-digit unique number.
  • Issued by – Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
  • Consists of– Biometric (fingerprints and iris scans) and Demographicinformations
  • Importance –
    • Serves as proof of identity (valid anywhere in India)
    • Aadhaar card is compulsory while applying for a new PAN card or filing Income tax returns.
  • Who can apply?
    • Indians, NRIs, OCI cardholders and foreigners can apply for an Aadhaar Card.

According to the Aadhaar Act 2016, any individual must stay in India for 182 days or more in the year immediately preceding the date of enrolment application.

  • Baal Aadhaar – Children under the age of 5 will get the Blue Colour Aadhaar – valid till the child attains the age of 5 years.  
  • Cost of Charge – Aadhaar enrolment is completely free.
  • Services offered – Updating address, locking/unlocking biometric details, digital copy of Aadhaar etc.
  • What Aadhaar does not?
    • Does not profile people based on caste, religion, income, health and geography.
    • Does not confer any right of citizenship or domicile.

Government of India founded UIDAI as a statutory body on July 12, 2016, operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It was established in accordance with the regulations outlined in the Aadhaar Act 2016.
